HSMM?
I'm wondering if there is, or will be, any interoperability with the High Speed Multi-Media network in the ham radio community?

Also, I haven't bought a router yet. If you were to buy one today, would it be one of the OM1P's or one of the Ubiquiti devices? I'm way up in El Sobrante so I imagine I'm going to need to cover some ground if I'm ever going to link to the rest of you. :)

I'd recommend Ubiquiti for
I'd recommend Ubiquiti for long-distance links, they have higher power.
HSMM sounds like fun! First step for me would be to (finally) get a ham radio license.
If we can use Openwrt for HSMM then theoretically it shouldn't be difficult to build an Openwrt-based HSMM mesh firmware! I googled and found this link, which is a HSMM mesh network in Texas which uses OLSR, the same mesh network protocol 510pen uses: http://kb9mwr.blogspot.com/2010/08/hsmm-mesh-network-in-texas.html their firmware is here: http://hsmm-mesh.org/
You've Got Ham (Radio Operators)
OK, so now there are a few of us here at Cal who have AMPR.ORG IP addresses. Where do we go from here to help 510pen.org? What router should we get? Of course we want to use these as normal WIFI points as well.
Thanks/73,
Jack (K6JEB)
It depends...
It all depends on what you're trying to do. Do you want to mount the router indoors or outdoors? Will users and other mesh routers be in the same building or in other buildings? With integrated antennas or connector for external antennas? The Bullet M2 and NanoStation M2 are both pretty nice. They work with the latest version of Robin firmware. Also the MR500 has good bang for the buck.
re:it depends
Thanks for the reply Mark.
I definitely intend to mount the router outside.
Indeed the Bullet M2 and NanoStation M2 are on my shopping list and thanks for the heads-up with the MR500. Is there a local brick and mortar source for those?
Thanks!
Jack
PS - I've also been setting-up a WRT54G with the HSMM-MESH firmware. Since my antenna needs will be similar with both setups, I may start acquiring and/or building antennas for 2.4GHz.
Streakwave is a good source
Streakwave is a good source for routers and antennas. I guess they are local (San Jose) but I only visit their website..
